Heavy cast iron stoves require very careful handling and therefore it is strongly advised that they are never transported, especially long distances, by common carrier. There is a distinct risk of severe damage, both obvious and hidden, because of poor handling; jolts and knocks during transportation.

It is recommended that the purchaser makes a personal collection either directly from BD&CO or from a nearer BD&CO dealer who will have made a thorough Pre Delivery Inspection to ensure full customer satisfaction. Before buying a stove, any stove, do your homework.

Sooner or later your stove will need refurbishment. Make sure that the supplier from whom you purchase your stove carries spare parts; not just now but in the future.
Installation: Does the supplier provide an installation service or have access to an installer who is willing to fit the stove you have chosen to buy?
Is the installer registered with Hetas or equivalent body?
If your chimney requires lining make sure that when the liner comes to the end of its natural life it can be easily removed. Backfilling with, for example, vermiculite is not normally necessary and will certainly add to the difficulty and cost of removing the old liner.
It has become increasingly fashionable for a supplier to state that the stoves supplied are BS 13240 compliant. If BS 13240 is important to you, ask where they were tested; request proof of testing.
